Spin-out support for academic staff
Edinburgh Innovations (EI) is here to encourage and support enterprise among University of Edinburgh employees. When research breaks new ground, forming a spin-out company is just one way to commercialise intellectual property and see your research have real world impact. You will find that understanding your research's commercial potential will help to inform your research, help you distinguish yourself academically, and open up new funding streams. There can be many opportunities for significant financial rewards too.
Setting up a new spin-out is challenging and sometimes stressful. EI has the expertise to support you at every stage in the process of setting up a company. We can advise and offer practical help to find the funding and facilities the business needs, and assist you as you work alongside investors and experienced management whose longer-term objectives may be different from your own. Our contribution covers five main areas: IP management, business planning, market research, building your team, and finding funding.
Whether your business idea relates to your research or perhaps from elsewhere, EI has dedicated resources to help University staff achieve their entrepreneurial aspirations alongside their academic career at the University.

Entrepreneurial support for postdocs
We have worked with several postdocs who are exploring alternative career options, with a particular focus on enterprise, at the University of Edinburgh. Postdoctoral researchers from a range of disciplines have successfully set up their own ventures and raised finance from the government and private investors.
